Central South Dakota’s Missouri River Shores area

Text Box: The economic level on the Crow Creek Indian Reservation is on the same level as that of Haiti.

Text Box: More than 70% of the residents are unemployed, and 21% of the homes in the city don’t have plumbing or working kitchens.

There is a need for NEW clothing items, especially clothing items for children & infants.

There is also a need for diapers, women’s hygiene items, shampoo, bath soaps, laundry soap, tooth paste, tooth brushes, and other day to day hygiene items.

While today’s GAS & FOOD prices seem high to most Americans, the high prices are devastating to families such as those living on Crow Creek Indian Reservation who were already marginalized to a level of extreme impoverishment.

The reservation covers an area of about 400 square miles within Hyde, Hughes, and Buffalo counties. Of this area about 35 square miles is covered by major reservoirs and about 200 square miles is owned by the tribe or tribal members.

Most of Buffalo County is made up of Crow Creek Indian Reservation. It is the nation’s poorest county. The 2000 US Census said that Buffalo county had more poor children than any other county in the nation.

The latest census showed that a great many homes don’t have kitchens, plumbing or telephones. The number of homes in Buffalo county without these basic services is increasing.

All of this leads to a greater need for services from the outside to help this community’s families survive & stave off preventable health risks .
